Coordinated Adaptive Control of Multiple Flexible AC Transmission Systems using Multiple-input—Multiple-output Neuro-fuzzy Damping Control Paradigms

Abstract

This article presents a novel online adaptive non-linear multiple-input–multiple-output neuro-fuzzy control scheme for flexible AC transmission systems. The proposed control system synergistically integrates the time-frequency localization property of wavelets with locally controllable membership functions in the structure of neuro-fuzzy Takagi–Sugeno–Kang control. The proposed control scheme is checked for both multiple-input–single-output and multiple-input–multiple-output topologies. The performance of the proposed control system is validated against different contingencies and operating conditions using non-linear time-domain simulations and different performance indices. The results reveal that the proposed control scheme effectively damps the local and inter-area modes of oscillations.

Rabiah Badar

Rabiah Badar received her master degree in electronics from Quaid-I-Azam University, Islamabad, in 2005, and earned MS Computer Engineering from COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Islamabad, in 2009. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in electrical engineering from COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Abbottabad, Pakistan. Her current research interests include non-linear adaptive control, embedded systems, artificial intelligence, flexible AC transmission systems controllers, power system stability and control.

Laiq Khan

Laiq Khan received his B.Sc. (Hons) in electrical engineering from Pakhtoon Kwah University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan, in 1996 and his PhD (power system dynamics and control) from University of Strathclyde Glasgow, UK, in 2003. He worked as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Electronic Engineering, Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, Swabi, Pakistan, from June 2003 to February 2008. He then joined the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, COMSATS Institute of IT, Abbottabad, Pakistan, and worked as an associate professor until June 2011. Currently, he is Professor of Power System Dynamics and Control at COMSATS IIT, Abbottbad, Pakistan. His research interests include power system stability and control using power system stabilizers, flexible AC transmission systems controllers and high voltage direct current, robust control theory, intelligent control systems, non-linear adaptive intelligent control and adaptive predictive intelligent control, fault tolerant control, power system planning, and advanced optimization techniques.
