An Innovative and Practical Course for Environmental Educators

Pages 243-250 | Published online: 10 Dec 2010

Abstract

This article reports on the novel design, and successful outcome, of an environmental education course designed for both practicing teachers and nonformal educators. Challenges in developing the course included the following: (1) the variable education and resource needs of course enrollees, (2) the lack of consistent science and environmental backgrounds of course participants, and (3) the lack of science faculty training in teaching techniques and teacher education requirements. The solution was an integrated component course design and an assignment that was adapted to each participant. This article discusses the need for such a course, explores methods for overcoming the aforementioned challenges, and offers this course as a model for developing environmental education courses.
