Dean Keith Simonton

Deert Keith Simonton obtained his 1975 Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Harvard University, where he was a Fellow of the National Science Foundation. In 1976 he joined the faculty of the Unwef sity of California. Davis, where he was named Distinguished Professor of Psychology. His research program concentrates on various aspects of genius, creativity. Ieade is hip, talent, and aesthetics. He has studied eminent scientists and inventors, great philosophers, litefary giants, illustrious artists, classical composers, the Presidents of the United States, absolute monarchs of Europe. and other distinguished achievers In almost every domain of accomplishment. In these studies he has examined such factors as intelligence, precocity, personality, values motivatm family environment, education, political circumstances, and the broad sociocultural milieu. He has produced approximately 400 publications, including articles in the technical journals of psychology, education, sociology, anthropology, political science, statistics, the natural sciences, and the humanities. He also authored eleven books: Genius, Creativity, and Leadership (Harvard 1984), Why Presidents Succeed: A Politicai Psychology of Leadership (Yale 1987), Scientific Genius; A Psychology of Science (Cambridge 19&8). Psyshology, Science, and History (Yale 1900). Greatness: Who Makes History and Why (Gullford 1994), Genius and Creativiiy: Selected Papers (Ablex 1996). Origins of Genius: Darwinian Peispectives on Creativity (Oxford 1999). Great Ps’/chologists and Their Times: Scientific Insights into Psychology’s History (American Psychological Association 2002). Creativity in Science: Chance. Logic. Gemus, and Zeitgeist (Cambridge 2004). Genius iOr (Springer 2009). and Great Ricks: Scientific Studies of Cinematic Creativity and Aesthetics (Oxford, in press). In addition, he is co-editing a companion volume on The Social Science of Cinema (Oxford, in press).

Simonton has ddivered invited addresses before numerous organizations, including the Council of Scientific Society Presidents. Sociedad Interamericana de Psicologia, Intemational Association of Empirical Aesthetics, International Society for the Psychology of Science and Technology. International Leadership Association, International Society fcr Intelligence Research. Worid Coureil for Gifted and Talented Children, Association for Psychological Science. American Psychological Association. Gerontological Society of America, and the National Association for Gifted Children. He has served as Editor of the Journal of Creatue Behavior. Guest Editor for the Leadership Quarterly and the Review of General Psychology, and currently serves cn a dozen editorial boards, such as the Creativiy Reseanch Journal, Empirical Studies of the Arts, the Psychology of Aesthetics. Creativity, and the Arts, the International Journal of Creatuity & Problem the solving, Review of General Psychology, and Perspectives on Psychological Science.

Simonton is Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Fsychological Association (in nine divisions), the American Psychological Society, the American Association of Applied and Preventative Psvchdogy, and the Internatimal Association of Empirical Aesthetics. He is Past President of both the International Association for Empirical Aesthetics and the Sodety for Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts, and is President-Elect of the Sodety for General Psychology (Division I, American FSychologieal Association), Moreover, he has been honored with the William James Book Award, the Rudolf Am heim Award for Outstanding Contributions to Psychology and the Arts, the Sir Framis Gatton Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Study of Creativity, the Theoretical Innovation Prize in Perscnality and Sodai Psychology, the George A. Miller Outstanding Article Award, two Awards for Excellence of the Mensa Education and Research Foundation, the President’s Award from the National Assodation for Gifted Children, and the Robert S.
