ABSTRACT

Transgender and gender expansive individuals experience high rates of substance use disorders compared to their cisgender peers. However, there is a dearth of research regarding prevalence and correlates of substance use disorders among transgender and gender expansive individuals. Moreover, few evidence-based interventions exist for transgender and gender expansive individuals. We propose that social workers and other practitioners working with members of this community combine affirmative practice models with existing interventions and services to better meet the needs of transgender and gender expansive individuals.
