On the Radical Cation Spectra of Fullerenes and Fulleranes. Part 1: C₆₀, C_70,C₇₆, C₇₈ and C₈₄

Abstract

The radical cation of the fullerene series C₆₀, C_70,C₇₆, C₇₈ and C₈₄ were generated in oleum (fuming sulphuric acid with 30% free SO₃) and analyzed by electronic absorption spectroscopy. A general agreement was found between the fullerenes radical cation spectra generated in oleum and those described in the literature and produced in other conditions. An attempt to correlate the radical cation transition of C₆₀, C₇₀, C₇₆, C₇₈ and C₈₄ in oleum with their ionization potential was proposed.
