Abstract

Carbon nano-onions with hollow/shell structures were directly synthesized by a combustion synthesis process, using poly (tetrafluoroethylene) powders and ferrous chloride as raw materials. The growth of an intermediate FeF2 core template which is a dynamic-controlled process is demonstrated to be the key factor to prepare hollow carbon nano-onions. Raman spectroscopy revealed that the as-synthesized product was mainly composed of amorphous carbon. Such unique process suggests a new method for controlling the growth of an intermediate core to prepare different hollow carbon nanostructures.
