“Measuring” Academic Growth: Where Does Measurement Reside?—A commentary on Measurement: A Very Short Introduction by David J. Hand

Notes

1. In physics, speed is a scalar quantity representing the rate of travel, irrespective of direction, while velocity is a vector quantity that also incorporates direction. For physics, I focused on the speed of travel rather than the velocity to highlight the parallel between the physics formulation of base quantities and derived quantities and similar quantities for auxological and educational applications. In auxology and education, I use the term velocity rather than speed because in those contexts there is generally understood to be only 1 direction of travel.
