ABSTRACT

The present paper employs the extended iso-geometric approach (XIGA) for investigating the behavior of cracks in three-dimensional (3D) engineering components. The non-uniform rational B-splines-based interpolation functions are used for the approximation of the displacement fields in the domain. The standard iso-geometric approximations have been modified by adding appropriate enrichment functions, which introduce the effect of different discontinuities in the formulation. XIGA models all types of discontinuities present in the domain independent of the grid chosen for analysis. The mixed mode stress intensity factors (SIF) in 3D cracked specimens have been obtained by the domain-based interaction integral approach. Finally, numerical tests have been performed on different 3D cracked specimens to demonstrate the capabilities of the extended iso-geometric approach in modeling such problems. The results obtained in the present study have been compared with the analytical solutions available in literature. The numerical solutions are also validated with XFEM and EFGM simulations performed in the present study.
