Abstract
The trafficking of molecules across the mitochondrial outer membrane is mediated primarily by channels. The channel of the translocase of the outer membrane (the TOM complex channel) supports protein import, whereas metabolite transport is mediated by the voltage-dependent anion channel (the VDAC), known also as mitochondrial porin. Using a simple model of Saccharomyces cerevisiae mitochondria, it is possible to study the functional relationships among the channels as well as their regulation by cellular protein.
