Pages 324-332 | Published online: 08 Aug 2012

Abstract

This article discusses the benefits and problems associated with tagging biomedical information. Tagging is considered in relationship to online and open access information, as well as with a library's traditional cataloging system. The discussion includes background information on tagging and social classification, as well as a comparison of natural language and controlled vocabulary. Success stories of biomedical tagging are shared and possible solutions to the problems caused by tagging are examined.
