Abstract
Eating disorders are serious medical and mental health conditions which are highly treatable. Unfortunately, like many mental health conditions, they are shrouded in stigma and there are many barriers to obtaining treatment and support for them—especially for people identifying as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans, Queer, and others (LGBTQ+), fat, male, or who have low incomes. This article lists organizations and websites whose work involves promoting awareness for eating disorders as well as providing information and support for those experiencing them. These resources are primarily geared toward a consumer health audience, though there are some more professional resources as well.
Notes
1 Underweight, like normal- and overweight are troublesome descriptors. These concepts imply that all bodies should conform to a specific size and that if they do not, they are somehow wrong. These ideas also are based in the body mass index (BMI) which is well-known to be flawed, rooted in racism, and never intended as an indicator of health (Your Fat Friend Citation2019).
