Reviews & Research of Note: Introduction

Two Timely and Relevant Book Reviews

Page 139 | Published online: 27 Jun 2012

Both of the book reviews contained in this issue focus on topics that are significant, well-timed, and the subject of the current discourse. The first book, The Adjunct Faculty Handbook, edited by Lorri Cooper and Bryan Booth, provides a wealth of practical information for adjuncts, or any higher education instructor. The use of adjunct faculty is currently on the rise. For example, The Chronicle of Higher Education abounds with discussions of adjunct faculty; in the last year alone, it has published 330 articles, blog posts, and more on the topic. In their review, Kristian J. Sund, Ashok Srivastava, and Kamla Binji point out the usefulness of The Adjunct Faculty Handbook for contingent faculty, who are often appointed with very little preparation time. Sund et al. found the book useful for their own teaching.

The second book, Moral Courage in Organizations: Doing the Right Thing at Work, edited by Debra R. Comer and Gina Vega, takes a positive look at ethical decision making in organizations. Through presentation of situations and people who take the moral high ground, the book focuses on doing the “right” thing, rather than presenting ethical lapses. In their review, James V. M. L. Holzer and Joanne L. Tritsch give an overview of the book and then comment on each chapter in the book, including “A Short Primer on Moral Courage,” “The Personal Ethical Threshold,” and “Giving Voice to Values: Building Moral Competence.” Each chapter is more interesting than the next.
