BRIEFINGS

From Communal Conflicts to Terrorism in Poso, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia: A Shifting Terrain

Notes

1 Based on my fieldwork investigations, conducted in 2003–2004.

2 According to police records, in the period 2001–2006, there were 35 sporadic incidents of shootings, bombings, murder, robbery or theft, and arson (Karnavian Citation2008, 293–311).

3 The open letter that was attributed to Santoso was originally published on the blog page of anshoruttauhidwassunnahwaljihad.blogspot.com. The blog is no longer accessible from Indonesia. For security reasons, the government has blocked it. However, besides being mentioned in Mbai’s (Citation2014) work, some sites also published its contents. See for instance: http://densus88at.blogspot.co.id/2012/10/densus-88-pengecut.html

4 Two videos uploaded on YouTube in July and October 2013 showed Santoso’s resentment of the police for oppressing Muslims in Poso, as well as his call for people to fight Densus 88.
