THE INTERACTIVE WEB: Lisa D. Travis, Column Editor

Renal Physiology Resources

 

ABSTRACT

Renal physiology is the study of all functions of the kidney. There is a mnemonic, A WET BED, that helps one remember kidney functions: A) maintenance of ACID-base balance; W) maintenance of WATER balance; E) balance of ELECTROLYTES; T) removal of TOXINS; B) control of BLOOD pressure; E) production of ERYTHROPOIETIN; and D) metabolism of vitamin D. This article will highlight interactive websites and tutorials that may serve as supplemental material for teaching and learning renal physiology for allied health, nursing, and medical students.

The column editor, Lisa D. Travis, began locating, annotating, and adding interactive websites to her library’s web page during her first professional position in 2002. Over the course of her career, she has supported a wide variety of health sciences programs including Medicine, Nursing, Occupational and Physical Therapy, Radiography, Veterinary Technology, and Medical Assisting and has continued to add to her collection of links to interactive websites. Faculty, students, and alumni have provided her with websites for her collection, requested searches for useful websites, and provided notes for annotations. The Interactive Web column reviews freely available Internet resources that are interactive in some form and/or provide helpful videos and animations. The websites are used for assignments, lectures, and self-study purposes and are available for viewing within a WordPress blog website at https://thewebisinteractive.wordpress.com/. Each of the favorite websites of users is tagged as favorite and labeled with a star.
