Spirituality, faith, and social change: A case study of Vida Dutton Scudder

Pages 2-17 | Published online: 07 Dec 2010

Vida Dutton Scudder (1861–1954) — Wellesley College professor, social activist, Episcopal churchwoman, and Christian socialist — believed that constructive social change required both radical restructuring of the social order and moral transformation of individuals. Scudder's Trinitarian faith, social philosophy, and social action were rooted in three truths manifested in her experience: paradox is in the nature of ultimate reality; God, rather than self, is the source of love; and all living beings are vitally connected.
