Social forces and the future of catholic schools

Pages 14-26 | Published online: 07 Dec 2010

The social forces affecting Catholic schools at all levels which have placed Catholic education under great stress are discussed. The development of Catholic education in America is traced in relation to mission, the changing values of society, social status of Catholics, role of the community, religious pluralism, and the First Amendment to the Constitution. The teaching mission of the Church is discussed in relation to the quality of Catholic education, support for it, Canon Law, and the role of the theologian. If quality at all levels is achieved and maintained, support will follow and Catholic education in America will survive, serving both Church and nation.
