An Integrated Sensory-linguistic Approach for Drug Addiction: A Synthesis of the Literature and New Directions for Treatment Research

ABSTRACT

A literature review of current neuroscientific research on stress vulnerability and addiction processes is presented, with implications for incorporating such basic science findings into new addiction treatment developments. Specifically, synthesis of the research shows that substance abuse disrupts brain structure and functioning in ways that may require multi-modal interventions that utilize both verbal and nonverbal treatment strategies.
