The Investigation of Fiber Surface Condition from Basalt-like Rocks for Enhanced Industrial Applications

, , &

ABSTRACT

The results of the investigations of the surface of basalt fibers from rocks are given in the article. The effect of melt homogeneity on the state of the fiber surface is shown. Acid treatment significantly changes the fiber surface structure. Basalt fibers treated with hydrochloric and sulfuric acid are characterized by a high porosity and a developed surface. The presented results indicate the possibility of using these fibers with protective and sorption properties for the production of composite materials of various compositions and purpose, especially filter materials.

Highlights

  • The original basalt fibers were treated with aqueous solutions of hydrochloric and sulfuric acid to increase the specific surface and porosity.

  • Fiber samples were additionally saturated with benzene vapor to study the composition of hydroxyl groups on their surface.

  • Basalt fibers treated with hydrochloric and sulfuric acid are characterized by a high porosity and a developed surface.
