ABSTRACT

This work is focused on utilizing the unconventional chiengora fibers for textile applications. In this research, the chiengora fibers from lhasa apso are made into yarns in association with polyester and acrylic. Their yarn characteristics are evaluated in comparison with wool yarn and its blends that are produced and the results are presented. Yarns of 16 blend proportions are produced using rotor spinning machine. During yarn spinning, fiber loss in carding and sliver breakages is higher for 100% chiengora yarns spinning. The actual blend proportions matches with mixing blend proportions closely when the chiengora content (25%) is least in the blended yarns. The count of all these yarns are maintained as 14 s Ne. It is observed that all the yarn properties deteriorate with increase in chiengora and wool content. ANOVA shows that there is significant difference between different blend proportions of each group of yarn in all the properties evaluated. The yarn characteristics of chiengora fibers are observed to be similar to wool. However, the Yarn Quality Index (YQI) of 75/25 and 50/50 lhasa apso polyester were found to be better indicating their suitability for further usage in fabrics.
