A Garden of Marvels: Tales of Wonder from Early Medieval China

Notes

1 Han shu, juan 30 (Beijing: Zhonghua shuju, 1983), 1745.

2 Siku quanshu zongmu tiyao, juan 140; for easy reference, see http://guji.artx.cn/article/18509.html.

3 See Li Jianguo, Xinji Shoushen ji, Xinji Shoushen houji (Beijing: Zhonghua shuju, 2007), 531, which is the base text here. The text goes on to relate that the protagonist killed the macaque and the “ten children.” There is some debate whether “ten” is an error, as the total number of offspring from this liaison should be eighteen. The number of women and the number of children are both omitted in the translation. It is possible that Campany opted to follow a different version of the text here.

4 See Shi's biography in Sanguozhi, juan 49 (Beijing: Zhonghua shuju, 1982), 1191.
