To Martin S. Bergmann with Love

Abstract

In this tribute to Martin S. Bergmann, the author pays homage to his classically informed, intellectually rigorous perspective on psychoanalysis. Bergmann conceptualized psychoanalysis as an open-ended method of inquiry, interpretation, and reconstruction, and believed that the process of understanding the self was the prerequisite to loving another.
