A new tetrapodal ligand, 1,1,1,1‐tetrakis {[(2′‐N‐hydroxymethylformyl)phenoxyl] methyl}methane and its solid complexes of rare earth nitrates and picrates have been synthesized. These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and molar conductivity. At the same time, the luminescence properties of the Eu(III) and Tb(III) nitrates complexes in methanol were also investigated. These complexes exhibited characteristic emission of europium and terbium ions under the excitation of UV light. The influence of central backbone of the ligands on the luminescent intensity was also discussed.
