Synthesis and Crystal Structures of Two Zinc(II) Complexes with the Schiff Bases 2-[(3-Diethylaminopropylimino)methyl]phenol and 1-[(3-Diethylaminopropylimino)methyl]naphthalen-2-ol

Abstract

Two new structurally similar mononuclear Schiff base zinc(II) complexes, [ZnBr2L1] (1) and [ZnI2L2] (2) (L1 = 2-[(3-diethylaminopropylimino)methyl]phenol, L2 = 1-[(3-diethylaminopropylimino)methyl]naphthalen-2-ol), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Zn atom in each of the complexes is four-coordinated by one phenolate oxygen atom and one imine nitrogen atom of a Schiff base ligand and by two halide ligands, forming a tetrahedral geometry. In the crystal structures of both complexes, molecules are linked through intermolecular hydrogen bonds of types N−H · · · O, forming chains running along the b axis. The similar Schiff bases used in the preparation of the complexes with zinc(II) halides can result in the similar structures of the final products.

a R 1 = ∑ | |Fo| − |Fc| |/∑ |Fo|, wR 2 = [∑ w(Fo 2Fc 2)2/∑ w(Fo 2)2]1/2, w 1 = σ 2(Fo)2+ [0.0554(Fo 2+ 2Fc 2)/3]2 − 1, w 2 = {σ 2(Fo)2+ [0.0403(Fo 2+ 2Fc 2)/3]2}− 1.
