Abstract

Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs)/alumina (Al2O3) composites with a homogenous distribution of carbon nanotube on alumina were developed by high-energy ball milling method. One weight percent of MWCNT/Al2O3 nanocomposite were formed by means of spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1350°C. It was found that MWCNT tend to locate along the alumina grain boundaries and therefore inhibit the grain growth and maintain the nanosize. A significant improvement in mechanical properties is observed at room temperature, especially the fracture toughness. The toughening mechanism is discussed in the present study.
