Selection of Chestnuts (Castanea sativa) in Srinagar District of the Kashmir Valley, India

Abstract

The present investigation was carried out with the aim of selecting chestnut types that have superior nut and yield characteristics in Srinagar district of Kashmir province, India. Bearing habit, number of nuts per burr, number of plump nuts per burr, nut weight, nut size, pellicle adhesion and intrusion, and cropping efficiency were evaluated as per FAO Corporate Document Repository and UPOV (1989). The following selections were identified for their special quality scores: HSC032, HSC025, HSC040, HSC018, and HSC022.
