Terminology of Sexuality Expressions that Exclude Penetration: A Literature Review

, , &
Pages 343-359 | Published online: 06 Dec 2011

Abstract

Precise terminology is paramount in sexuality education. Most sexuality research focuses on the dichotomous concepts of sexual intercourse and virginity, yet there are many expressions of sexuality classified as neither. The purpose of this literature review is to identify and examine the various terms and definitions describing sexuality expressions that exclude penetration (SEEPs). After searching 11 EBSCOhost databases and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 25 peer-reviewed articles were selected for review. Fourteen included oral sex as a potential SEEP, and six sources included anal sex as a potential SEEP. Implications and recommendations for sexuality educators are addressed.
