The Art and Craft of Psychoanalytic Practice: A Discussion of Orange's “Speaking the Unspeakable: ‘The Implicit,’ Traumatic Living Memory, and the Dialogue of Metaphors”

Abstract

Donna Orange's approach suggests a radical emotional embodying of the analytic relationship in which metaphor allows the unspeakable to become spoken through the articulation of the embodied experience of traumatic living memory. The art and craft of human relating or the mortising and tenoning of the human connection, are fertile ground for metaphor – the democratic linguistic form available to hand for all. The analysts' choices become more about the ethics of human relating, timing, tact, and the care of a particular patient than about technical rules. Fresh metaphors that evolve within the analytic work or come from the place where psychoanalysis meets other fields of thought have the potential to deepen our understanding and freshen our perspective. Metaphors that come to be commonplace in our theoretical worlds run the risk of becoming deadening metaphors that can constrict our creative responsiveness to each unique analytic moment.

L'approccio di Donna Orange suggerisce una radicale comprensione emotiva della relazione analitica, una prospettiva in cui la metafora consente all'indicibile di diventare dicibile tramite l'articolazione dell'esperienza incarnata della memoria traumatica vivente. L'arte e la perizia dello stabilire una relazione umana o la mortasa e il tenone della connessione umana, costituiscono un terreno fertile per la metafora – la forma linguistica democratica da condividere con tutti. Le scelte dell'analista diventano perciò più relative all'etica della relazionalità umana, del timing, del tatto e della cura di un particolare paziente piuttosto che a regole tecniche. Le metafore che nei nostri mondi teorici si trasformano in luoghi comuni, corrono il rischio di diventare opprimenti e possono comprimere la nostra responsività creativa all'unicità di ciascun momento analitico.

L'art de la relation humaine, ou l'assemblage à tenon et mortaise de la connection humaine, est un terrain fertile pour la métaphore –une forme linguistique démocratique accessible à tous. Les choix des analystes portent alors davantage sur l'éthique de la relation humaine, le sens du moment approprié, le tact, et le soin apporté au patient particulier, plus que sur des règles techniques. Des métaphores nouvelles qui émergent à l'intérieur du travail analytique ou qui proviennent de la rencontre entre la psychanalyse et les autres domaines de pensée, offrent un potentiel d'approfondissement de notre compréhension et de renouvellement de nos perspectives. Les métaphores qui deviennent des lieux communs dans nos mondes théoriques courent le risque de devenir des métaphores mortifères qui peuvent contraindre nos réponses créatrices à chaque moment analytique unique.

Metaphern, die zu Gemeinplätzen in unserer Theorie werden, sind in Gefahr, zu leblosen Metaphern zu werden, die unsere kreative Responsivität im jeweils einzigartigen analytischen Moment beengen können.

El abordaje de Donna Orange sugiere una corporización radical de la relación analítica en la que la metáfora permite que lo que no se puede hablar sea hablado a través de la articulación de la experiencia corporizada de la memoria traumática que persiste. El arte de las relaciones humanas y de la conexión entre personas es el terreno fértil para la metáfora, la forma lingüística democrática que está disponible para todo el mundo. La decisiones del analista dependen más de la ética de las relaciones humanas, del tacto y del cuidado de un determinado paciente que no de las reglas técnicas. Las metáforas frescas que provienen del trabajo analítico o de los encuentros entre el psicoanálisis y otras disciplinas tienen el potencial de profundizar nuestra comprensión y de refrescar nuestra perspectiva. En cambio, las metáforas que devienen un lugar común en nuestros mundos teóricos corren el riesgo de convertirse en metáforas mortíferas que pueden constreñir nuestra respuesta ante cada momento analítico.
