A Jewish Voice and the Creation of a Tikkun Olam Culture—Discussion of “Irreducible Cultural Contexts: German–Jewish Experience, Identity, and Trauma in a Bilingual Analysis”

Abstract

Drawing upon the Jewish ethics of “Tikkun Olam” (“repair of the world”) and the conceptual lens of complexity systems theory, this discussion considers the German–Jewish tensions played out in the analytic dialogue to be a specific instance of a wider dialogue concerning the relationship between Jews and Germans in our contemporary world—a world that still lives under the shadow of the holocaust. Roger Frie's and Daniel's capacity to embrace the complexity of their different personal histories generated a moving, healing process not just for themselves, but also for the world into which they have been thrown.

Accostando le prospettive etiche ebraiche di Tikkun Olam (la riparazione del mondo) e le lenti concettuali della teoria dei sistemi complessi, la mia discussione considera le tensioni tedesco-ebraiche emergenti nel dialogo analitico come uno specifico caso di un più vasto dialogo concernente le relazioni tra ebrei e tedeschi nel nostro mondo contemporaneo, un mondo che vive ancora sotto l'ombra dell'Olocausto. La capacità di Roger e Daniel di abbracciare la complessità delle loro differenti storie personali ha generato un toccante processo curativo, non solo personale ma anche per il mondo in cui entrambi sono stati gettati.

En m'inspirant de la morale juive de Tikkun Olam (réparation du monde) et de la perspective conceptuelle de la théorie des systèmes et de la complexité, ma discussion propose que les tensions allemande/juive qui se jouent dans le dialogue analytique serait un cas particulier du dialogue plus large concernant les relations entre les juifs et les allemands dans notre monde contemporain, un monde qui vit toujours dans l'ombre de l'Holocauste. Les capacités de Roger et de Daniel de saisir la complexité de leur histoire personnelle différente a généré un processus très touchant de guérison non seulement pour eux-mêmes mais aussi pour le monde dans lequel ils ont été jetés.

Unter Einbeziehung der ethischen Vorstellungen des jüdischen Tikkun Olam (repair of the world) und der Sicht der „complexizy systems theory”, betrachtet meine Arbeit die deutsch-jüdischen Spannungen, wie sie sich im analytischen Dialog zeigen. Dabei sind sie ein spezifischer Moment eines breiteren Dialogs, der sich mit der Beziehung zwischen Juden und Deutschen in unserer heutigen Welt beschäftigt, eine Welt, die noch immer im Schatten des Holocaust lebt. Rogers und Daniels Fähigkeit, die Komplexität ihrer unterschiedlichen persönlichen Geschichte einzubeziehen, erzeugte einen berührenden Heilungsprozess nicht nur für sie selbst, sondern auch für die Welt, in die sie „geworfen” wurden.

A partir de la ética judía de Tikkun Olam (reparación del mundo) y de las lentes conceptuales de la teoría de los sistemas complejos, mi discusión considera que las tensiones germánico-judías desplegadas en el diálogo analítico son un ejemplo del más amplio diálogo respecto la relación entre judíos y alemanes en nuestro mundo contemporáneo, un mundo que todavía vive bajo la sombra del Holocausto. La capacidad de Roger y Daniel de abarcar la complejidad de sus historias distintas generó un conmovedor proceso curativo no sólo para ellos mismos sino también para el mundo en el que ellos han sido arrojados.
