Transformation and Meeting the Face of the Other

Abstract

In this article, I present both clinical and personal examples of how “meeting the face of the Other” can enable us to transform our own personal narratives. I utilize Kohut’s notion that we may transform our personal existence to a supra-individual participation in the world, Kulka’s conceptualization of Kohut’s idealized selfobject as the agent for transformation, and Levinas’ ethical stance of responsibility for the Other, as the theoretical underpinnings for my article. Finally, I offer a literary analysis of a Biblical text that demonstrates this transformative potential on a global level.

Je m’attache à montrer, à l’aide d’exemples personnels et cliniques, que la « rencontre du Visage de l’autre » est à même d’apporter des changements dans notre propre récit de vie. Pour cela, je m’appuie sur l’intuition kohutienne que notre existence individuelle peut devenir participation supra-individuelle dans le monde, sur la conceptualisation, proposée par Kulka, de l’objet-soi idéalisé de Kohut comme agent de transformation et sur l’éthique de responsabilité d’autrui de Levinas. Enfin, l’analyse d’un texte biblique viendra illustrer ce potentiel transformateur sur un plan plus universel.

In questo articolo presento esempi personali e derivati dalla clinica relativi a come “l’incontro con il volto dell’ Altro” possa mettere in grado di trasformare le proprie narrative personali. Come costrutti teorici fondanti per il mio lavoro faccio uso della nozione di Kohut sulla possibilità di trasformare la nostra esistenza personale per attingere ad una partecipazione sovra-individuale al mondo, della concettualizzazione di Kulka dell’oggettosé idealizzato di Kohut come agente della trasformazione, e della posizione etica di Levinas circa la responsabilità per l’Altro. Infine presento una analisi letteraria di un testo biblico che dimostra le potenzialità trasformative ad un livello globale.

In diesem Artikel stelle ich Beispiele klinischer und persönlicher Art vor, wie das “Treffen auf das Gesicht des Anderen” uns dazu befähigen kann, unsere persönlichen Narrative zu transformieren. Ich benutze als Grundlage meiner Erörterungen Kohuts Vorstellung, dass wir unsere persönliche Existenz in die über-individuelle Teilhabe an der Welt transformieren können und Kulkas Konzeptualisierung des Kohutschen idealisierenden Selbstobjektes als Agenten der Transformation sowie Levinas ethische Position der Verantwortung für den Anderen. Schließlich biete ich eine literarische Analyse eines biblischen Textes an, der das transformative Potential auf einer globalen Ebene aufzeigt.

En este artículo, voy a presentar ejemplos clínicos y personales de cómo el “conocer la cara del Otro” nos posibilita la transformación de nuestras propias narrativas personales. Utilizo como fundamentos teóricos de mi artículo la noción de Kohut de que podemos transformar nuestra existencia personal en una participación supra-personal en el mundo, también la conceptualización de Kulka sobre los selfobjects idealizados de Kohut como agente de transformación, y también la actitud ética de responsabilidad ante el Otro de Levinas. Por último, doy el análisis literario de un texto bíblico que demuestra esta potencia transformativa a un nivel global.
