Abstract

The mineralogical, morphological, chemical structure, and source of kerogen in the Güvenç shales were investigated. The X-ray diffraction patterns of bulk rock of all specimens indicated that they are mainly composed of chlorite, illite, smectite, quartz, calcite, feldspar, and dolomite minerals. Mixed layer smectite-chlorite and smectite-illite, and shell organism were determined according to scanning electron microscope analyses. Organic matter of Güvenç shales, which is mainly composed of type III kerogen, exhibits a relatively high aromatic character according to pyrolitic and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. Geochemical analyses indicate that organic matter has the potential for gas generation.
