Co-gasification of biomass and municipal solid waste for hydrogen-rich gas production

ABSTRACT

Gasification is a high-temperature thermochemical process to generate a clean syngas which can be used as an alternative method for fuel conversion. In this article, a kinetic model of co-gasification of biomass and municipal solid waste (MSW) was developed to study the influence of several critical parameters such as biomass/MSW ratio, reactor temperature, and steam/fuel ratio on gas composition, hydrogen yield, and tar content. Results showed that the H2 concentration significantly varies in the produced syngas with changing the MSW/biomass ratio may be due to limited water gas shift and tar cracking reactions. Also, it was found that the tar content does not change significantly with average values of steam/fuel ratio probably due to the slow kinetics of the hydrocarbon steam reforming reactions at a constant temperature.
