Abstract

As a candidate country for the European Union (EU), Turkey should make significant strategy plans about the consumption and production of basic energy sources. In this study, a performance evaluation of 25 member states of the EU, Norway, Croatia, Switzerland, and Turkey regarding energy consumption was conducted employing data envelopment analysis in order to draw up a good future energy policy. Since the data on Malta and Cyprus were incomplete, these two nations were excluded from the evaluation. The data set covers the period between 1998 and 2006 and energy indicators used in the analysis were taken from the EUROSAT for all selected countries. Results of th analysis show that Turkey's most important goal for the future is to produce proper energy policies.
