1. Because there are so many editions of Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, it is more convenient to use internal divisions rather than page numbers to identify the reference.

2. In the case of some texts, I do not have the English translations available. I am providing the internal references in these cases so that the reader can easily locate the citations in the English version.

3. The doctrinal confusion caused by Arius and his radical attempt to simplify the mystery of the Trinity led to the development of ever more sophisticated philanthropic institutions. The competition among these various sects to win the hearts of the people in Constantinople also stimulated liturgical development (Cotsonis 1994, 15).

Timothy S. Miller

Timothy S. Miller is Professor of History at Salisbury University, Salisbury, Maryland where has been teaching medieval and Renaissance history since 1983. His field of specialization is Byzantine History and he has written three books on Byzantine (Orthodox Christian) philanthropic institutions: The Birth of the Hospital in the Byzantine Empire; The Orphans of Byzantium; and Walking Corpses: Leprosy in Byzantium and the Medieval West.
