Abstract

A study was made of women members of the Community Development Society as of 1980–81. A major aspect of the study concerned the degree to which women are participating in the Community Development Society. This part of the study investigated such things as female membership and the proportion of women members who serve on the board of directors, hold offices, publish articles in the Journal, and make presentations at annual meetings.

The results showed that although the proportion of women in the CDS had increased between 1970–80, their participation in the activities of the society was low. These low rates of involvement seem to correspond to low rates of interest. As compared to women in some closely related professions, women community development professionals publish less often. Some suggestions are made for increasing the participation of women in the CDS.

The balance of the study investigated a number of characteristics of women CD professionals as represented by the study population. The kinds of jobs women CD'ers hold, the kinds of people and issues they work with, income levels, educational background, role models, and sexual harassment are depicted.
