Chemical Transformations of Chloromethylated Polystyrene

Abstract

The chemical modification of polymers is a very fruitful method to prepare useful functionalized macromolecules. Between 1950 and 1955 the chloromethylation of polystyrene permitted an important development of the technology of ion-exchange resins [1–6]. Later, through the use of polymer supports, various syntheses of peptides [7, 8] were made possible and so were preparations of metal catalysts bonded with macromolecules [9]; other applications were found in the field of organic synthesis [10–23].
