The Supreme Court Shuffle: What It Means for Social Work

&
Pages 155-177 | Published online: 11 Oct 2008

ABSTRACT

Although social workers often focus on policy made by the legislative branch, it is undeniable that the courts―particularly the U.S. Supreme Court―wield enormous influence over the life chances and opportunities of all Americans. As predicted, President Bush had the first opportunity in more than a decade to alter the composition of the Supreme Court. This article examines the records of the Court's new members, Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito; summarizes selected cases decided during the 2005–2006 and 2006–2007 terms; and discusses implications of these recent changes for policies of importance to social work. Policy practitioners are urged to engage in efforts to influence judicial policy making.
