Abstract
Many patients with invasive bladder carcinoma undergo radical cystectomy with ileal conduit diversion. A minority of these patients are complicated with portal hypertension. Stomal varices can develop at the mucocutaneous junction in these patients. Bleeding from the varices is a rare complication but delay in diagnosis can be fatal. We report a case of massive haemorrhage from stomal varices, which were successfully treated with variceal ligation. The patient had no further haemorrhage episodes in the last 3 years. Recognition of this complication is essential in the diagnosis and proper management of these patients. It is also important when considering urinary diversion in patients who are at risk of portal hypertension.
