Abstract
The emphasis of this review paper is on microwave and shortwave diathermy applicators. The same test methods can be used to evaluate the thermal effectiveness and radiation safety (leakage) of direct contact applicators at microwave and radiofrequendes (shortwave frequencies), A survey of these applicators indicates that there is little quantitative information available on the performance of shortwave applicators. Because of the recent development of simulated phantom material at shortwave frequencies, if is expected that much needed data on the thermal effectiveness and associated safety of these applicators will be forthcoming.
