Abstract

Using the Add Health data set of 6485 adolescents aged 11-21 years, it was found that whether participation in sports was a protective factor or a risk factor for suicidal ideation depended on the particular sport, as well as the sex and ethnicity of the adolescents. In general, team sports was associated with a protective effect, while participating in a sport outside of the gender norms (for example, cheer leading/dance for boys and wrestling for girls) was a risk factor. The results were clearer for White adolescents and less clear for Black, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American adolescents.
