“They'd Better Hope for a Lot of Free Parking”: Using Monopoly to Teach about Classical Liberalism, Marginalization, and Restorative Justice

Pages 11-15 | Received 19 May 2011, Accepted 24 Dec 2011, Published online: 19 Oct 2012

Abstract

Courses: Critical Ethnography, Rhetorical Criticism

Objective: Students will examine the limits of classical liberalism, expand their understandings of marginality and justice, and interrogate colorblind communication.

Notes

1. This usually takes four to six trips around the board.

2. Importantly, students should have witnessed marginalization and the process of generating restorative solutions without invoking contentious political exigencies, e.g., Affirmative Action, which might evoke partisan and emotional responses.
