Neoliberal multiculturalism on college campuses: Fostering a critical understanding of diversity

Pages 178-182 | Received 19 Oct 2020, Accepted 24 Apr 2021, Published online: 11 May 2021

Abstract

This assignment introduces the concept of neoliberal multiculturalism through an examination of campus-wide practices to recruit and support students of color, international students, and other students of historically marginalized backgrounds. The activity details an emerging and common scenario of universities actively recruiting diverse students while limiting institutional and interpersonal support in the name of individualism and meritocracy. The activity develops student consciousness of institutional practices driven by neoliberalism and encourages a social-justice orientation to change policies and practices.
