Édouard Glissant : la « profondeur de l’étendue » ou la dimension de la Relation

ABSTRACT

Catherine Delpech-Hellsten explores the meaning of what Édouard Glissant calls “the Relation.” How can one describe Glissant's work and his intentions for writing? If we take into account the position of the exegete, the requirements and nature of the critical relationship, the epistemic and hermeneutic paths of inquiry beyond literature, it becomes evident that a new dimension—a new point of view—is emerging which can be equated to the ratio of Depth to Extension. This dialectic weaves throughout Glissant's poetics and indeed his entire work, leading to another fundamental question: How can we reread the concept of the Being, defined in terms of this ontological revolution?

Catherine Delpech-Hellsten

Catherine Delpech-Hellsten holds a doctorate in French language and literature. She is affiliated with the Université Jean Jaurès in Toulouse. Author of over twenty articles devoted to the work of Édouard Glissant, her monograph Édouard Glissant, passeur d’écumes will appear later this year (Éditions Hermann, 2016). In 2012, she translated Les Indes with Magdalena Sørensen into Swedish. Her comparative research focuses on poet-philosophers who address decolonization and independence, i.e., “Kateb Yacine et Édouard Glissant: deux poétiques irruées au même rendez-vous de l'Histoire” (Mémoires et Imaginaires du Maghreb et de la Caraïbe, Honoré Champion, 2013). Her forthcoming book chapters and edited volumes include a collection of essays from the 2015 colloquium she organized with the l'Institut du Tout-monde in Paris “Frantz Fanon, Kateb Yacine, Édouard Glissant. Relation et indépendances” (Hermann, 2016).
