ABSTRACT
Broadcast interpreters are facing a dilemma translating President Trump's words; they have to serve two masters, namely the original words and the viewers. The struggles are illustrated with examples of three peculiarities of Trump: repeatedly used simple words, chopped or incomplete sentences, and inflammatory language.

Chikako Tsuruta
Chikako Tsuruta is a conference interpreter/broadcast interpreter between English and Japanese. A professor at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies teaching interpreting at the Graduate School, his current teaching/research interests are the theory and practice of simultaneous interpreting.
