Animal ‘ER’: Nursing the Emergency Patient

Abstract

UK veterinary emergency and critical care medicine is evolving. Many 24-hour emergency centres now have dedicated staff to provide a high level of care. But what of the emergency case that turns up in general practice? Here, Michelle Richmond describes life in a special unit, along with some principles of emergency nursing that may prove useful in general practice

Michelle Richmond, DipAVN(Med),VN, qualified in 1995 and works for the Pet Emergency Treatment Services in Kent, which provides an out-of-hours service for 40 veterinary surgeons. The RCVS Trust has awarded her a travel scholarship to study advanced techniques in emergency nursing in the USA
