Abstract

Drains are surgical implants that serve to provide a means of escape for fluids and/or gases from a wound or cavity. Some drains are only required for a number of hours but most wound drains may be left for three to five days or in some cases longer. Drains are usually placed in a separate small stab wound adjacent to the surgical incision and secured with a non-absorbable monofilament suture.
