Abstract

The conjugate-gradient and Levenberg-Marquardt methods are used to solve the inverse radiation problem of estimating the temperature field in an absorbing, emitting, isotropically scattering, homogeneous solid sphere from measured exit radiation intensity. The strengths and weaknesses of each method are explored; it appears that a combination of both techniques is most effective for the optimal solution. Comparative results are presented for the effects of optical thicknesses, scattering albedo and standard deviations of measurement error on the accuracy of the estimates.
