Editorial special issue in Dark Tourism

ABSTRACT

This special issue of Journal of Heritage Tourism on dark tourism aims to encourage and advance theoretical, conceptual, and empirical research on dark tourism. The call for papers was inspired by the editor’s theoretical and research interest in dark tourism studies. The collection of articles in this special issue provides original, innovative and international tourism research that is embedded in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary theoretical and methodological thought in the study of dark tourism. Finally, this editorial will address a few lines of future research directions focusing on the experience and emotions of visitors at ‘dark tourism’ sites.

Rami K. Isaac

Rami K. Isaac was born in Palestine, he did his undergraduate studies in The Netherlands, graduate studies in the U.K. and has earned his PhD from University of Groningen, in Spatial Sciences, in The Netherlands. He is currently a senior lecturer in tourism teaching at the undergraduate as well as postgraduate levels at the Academy for Tourism at the Breda University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands. In addition, he is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management at Bethlehem University, Palestine. Currently he is the Vice- President of the Research Committee 50 on International Tourism, International Sociologist Association ISA (2018-2022). His research interests in the area of tourism development and management, critical theory, and political aspects of tourism. He published numerous articles and book chapters on tourism and political (in)stability, occupation, tourism and war, dark tourism, violence and transformational tourism.
