In 2010 the CAPRISA 004 tenofovir trials showed that this gel – applied vaginally 12 hours before and within 12 hours after sexual intercourse – reduced HIV incidence in trial participants (sexually active South African women between the ages of 18 and 40 years) by 39%. Later the same year the iPrEx trial results showed that in gay men, transgender women and other men who have sex with men, a combination drug taken before sex could reduce the risk of HIV by 44%. Studies are ongoing in other populations.
