I am grateful to Mrs Pamela Phillips, who provided me with Ray’s CV and other information about his life and theirs together. Three of Ray’s contemporaries from his working life contributed to this appreciation. As one asked not to be named, I cannot identify any of them but they will detect their contributions in my text.
