Working with sex offenders who have a learning disability

Pages 62-69 | Published online: 02 Jan 2008

Abstract

Therapeutic approaches which have been developed for work with sex offenders cannot always be directly applied to individuals who also have a learning disability. Such a disability, by definition, brings intellectual, social and often communication difficulties. This article discusses some of the challenges faced by therapists working with sex offenders with a learning disability and describes groupwork which attempted to combine psychological and art therapy techniques to overcome these difficulties.
